8/22/99 Janice Okun visited Root Five in Hamburg and gave it 1 1/2*.

            On the Links page I've added a link to the Fancy Food Shows web site. 

            The Empire Brewing Co. has signed a 10 yr. lease for the site formerly
             occupied by the Breckenridge Brewing Co. in the Theater District.
             They plan to open in November.

                There is also a new recipe for a Marinate/Bar-B-Q Sauce. Many thanks to 
             Mark from KALEIDA. He said you can substitute other seasonings to 
            customized it to your own tastes.

            The biggest outdoor wine event of the year is just one week away!

                On Saturday August 28th, the first ever Winefest will be held. The festival
                will have more than 200 different bottles of wine available for sampling.
               Several of the Premier Group wine associates will be on hand to judge the
               wines. (You'll be able to vote for your favorite wines after the event by
               visiting the Winefest.net website.) The festival includes free musical
              entertainment all day, and you'll also be able to purchase gourmet food,
              beer and soda. 

               Winefest will be held in front of the former Crawdaddys restaurant near the
               Erie Basin Marina on Saturday, August 28 from 12 to 7:30. Tickets are $15,
                including your souvenir glass; the event is free for non-wine drinkers.
               Tickets can be purchased at the festival, or they can be purchased at
                several area Tops Friendly Markets. When you purchase your Winefest ticket
               at Tops you also receive a free New York lottery ticket.

                  Most wines featured at Winefest are currently available for purchase at

               Next week is the 17th Annual Buffalo Irish  Festival at Willow Grove, Bowen Rd @ 
                Broadway, in Lancaster. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and kids.

8/8/99  Janice Okun, the Buffalo News' food editor, went to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Canada,
             and gave 4*  to Escabeche, which is located at 6 Picton St. 888-669-5566

           Joe George, from Artvoice, gave "An Ode to the Line Cook", in his column, 
           food for thought. He also gives us 4 recipes that will not heat up your kitchen.

              The latest Bon Appétit arrived yesterday and it looks great! The theme is
             "The American Century in Food".

             In the Buffalo New's magazine First Sunday, the featured chef is Matt Conroy,

             First - 3 1/2* to Murphy's Orchards Tea Room, 2402 McClew Rd. in Burt.

           Joe George, in his "food for thought" column in Artvoice, has and excellent article
                titled  Herb Cookery.

           In Night-Life Magazine the food article is by Jim Kersten and his visit to the
              MONTROSE bar and grill, 365 Somerville Ave. Tn of Ton. 836-9717.
                  a "Super Friendly Place" with great food and fish frys served 7 days a week.

7/24/99  Great news!!!

         Buffalo has been mentioned for the second consecutive month in GOURMET!

               That's right - last month they did an article about Chicken Wings and of course
           mentioned the Anchor Bar. It's on pg. 99 of the July issue. This month they did
              a very interesting article about another Buffalo favorite - BEEF ON WECK.
              The restaurants they featured were Schwabl's, Eckl's and Charlie the Butcher.
             The also wrote about our Sponge Candy and mentioned Parkside Candy and
           Mike's Homemade Candies. It's a shame they didn't mention Watson's.
          Also featured in the August GOURMET is an article about the Finger Lakes and
            also Southern Ontario! For once you don't have to travel very far to see for yourself
           the places they write about.
 
 

7/16/99            Attention: To My Faithful Foodies !!!
                 I just had a lengthy conversation with Jimmy Floyd, casting director
         for Food Network's "Ready, Set, Cook". He would like to set up a Daily
         Taste audience on the show. This would involve any Western New
         Yorkers (food writers, chefs, cooks & you) who would like to participate
         in an August 18, 19, and 20th taping. The show is taped at Metropolis
          Studio in New york City. Anyone planning to be in New York for those
          dates? It would be great  to have a full Western N.Y. house!

           Janice Okun of the Buffalo News gave 2 1/2* to Pettibones Grille.
             Pettibones is the restaurant in Dunn Tire Park (Baseball). They specialize
             in sandwiches and serve lunch M - F and weekends if a game is playing and
             also dinner if an evening game or an event at the Marine Midland Arena.

              Helen Russell from Buffalo Beat went to the Asa Ransom House iat 10529 
              Main St. in Clarence 759-2315. She gave it 2 1/2* for Cuisine, 3 1/2* Atmosphere
             and 3* for service.

             was the winner of "BOSS of the SAUCE"  competition (KISS 98.5) earlier

            In the Buffalo News' First Sunday, Lois Baker went to the Riverside Inn
             in Lewiston, and did a story on their chef - Randy Hagar. 
             The Riverside Inn is located at 115 S. Water St. in Lewiston, NY.  It

             Akron House is of course in Akron  and has a very interesting history.

6/26/99 Buffalo News' Janice Okun went to Hideaway Bay, 42 Lake St., Silver Creek.
             934-4442. It received 2*. 

              If you are Downtown and have a taste for Starbuck's Coffee - the new location
              opened at Delaware and Chippewa.

               Pick up this week's issue of Artvoice for the low down on "buffalo's culinary
                debut", an article by Paula Alba-Marshall. It was all about the three local
               chef's who prepared a meal at the James Beard House in New York City!
              The three local chefs were Sam Reda of Biac's World Bistro, Michael 
              Andrezjewski of Oliver's and Jo Chenet of Croquembouche.
                  " There was a standing ovation and I could not help but beam with pride for
              Sam, Michael and Jo as they flawlessly represented Buffalo in the height of
              culinary excellence".

6/21/99 Janice Okun of the Buffalo News tried a new restaurant called 
           Blue Moon Cafe at 532 Elmwood Ave. and gave it 2*. It's specialty
             is vegetarian! 886-7274

6/6/99 Janice Okun went to Shimschack's, a restaurant with one of the greatest
             view of Niagara county. She gave it 2* and found the best dish to be their
             Barbecued Baby Back Ribs. Shimschack's is at 2943 Upper Mountain Rd.
              in Sanborn   731-4111

            Be sure to check out today's First Sunday in the Buffalo News. There's a great article
              about Barbecue and also Lois Baker visits Root Five Waterfront. (Used to be
             Oscar's) It's at 4914 Lakeshore Rd. Rt. 5 in Hamburg . The new chef there is 
               Michael Storms recently from the East Aurora Country Club and a graduate of the
               CIA.

6/3/99  If you like clams and oyster, you'll  love Marotto's! We stopped there yesterday
            afternoon to satisfy our taste for fresh shellfish. It was a bit cool outside so we
            ate inside. We tried the raw oysters - delicious!. Our favorites were the Clams 
             Casino and the Oysters Florentine - EXCELLENT!!

5/30/99 Janice Okun was back to the Zuzon Bar and Grille and gave it 3*.
            The Zuzon is at 5110 Main St. in the Walker Center and is run by
             Mark an Sue Warren. Their Phone is 634-6123.

           Artvoice'sJoe George has an excellent article about Bread and how to
            Grill it, Bake it in a Skillet, bake it on a stick and also Sauté it. Be sure to 
             read the whole article in this week's Artvoice.

             Helen Russell from Buffalo Beat visited a new Franklin Street restaurant
              called Brownstone Bistro. It's at 297 Franklin St. behind Shea's.
              She gave it 3 3/4* for Cuisine, 4* for Atmosphere and 3 1/2* for Service.

5/23/99  A correction has been made in the Restaurant listing section.
           Flying Tigers Restaurant is not a chain and is locally owned by 
             Keith Radice.
                  Flying Tigers is located at 100 Amherst Villa Rd. 631-3465. It overlooks
              the main runway of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. It's a great
               exciting way to dine and the food is excellent!

             Reminder!!! Marotto's Clam Bar is now open!!! Mark has gone all out this
              year with the new Showcase Clam Bar and New Clam Alley Bistro. You can
             also eat  in the Air conditioned Lounge!. He is serving the freshest raw clams
             (They are delicious!!) and oysters and also features shrimp cocktail,
              corn on the cob, clams casino and oysters rockefeller.

5/8/99 This week, Janice Okun reported on a Bakery/Cafe on Hertel Ave. called 
           Romeo's Bakery Cafe. It's at 1197 Hertel. Their phone number is 873-5730
           She gave it 3*, but I would give it 5* easily! We got there early Sat. morning
             after reading about it in Friday's GUSTO. The place is great!!. We didn't eat
              there like Ms. Okun, but just looking around  made us want to come back.
              Romeo's is immaculate and the service couldn't be more friendly. We bought 
             canolis - I can't say enough about them- they were EXCELLENT!!! Light and 
              creamy- not so filling that you don't want to finish one after dinner. Actually,
              we had it as part of our breakfast - we couldn't wait! We also bought a loaf of
               fresh baked bread and we are going to have that toasted on the grill for 
               part of  Mother's day dinner.

               Read in the Buffalo News that there is going to be a Barbeque Challenge at the
             Erie County Fair Grounds. It's called the
                 Buffalo Stampede Barbecue Challenge!
             For more info call 836-2106. They are offering classes starting June 3rd to turn
               participants into certified barbecue judges! It's non-profit and the proceeds go to
                Mercy Flight and the Gloria Parks Senior Center in Buffalo. There are special
              cook's classes being held on May 21 and 22nd. be sure to call the above 
               number for complete instructions! The judging will be on Sat. June 5th. It's only
                 $5.00 to enter the grounds, and join in the fun!

               Paula Alba-Marshall visited Tratoria Aroma, an addition to Caffe Aroma at
                  5229 Main St. in Williamsville, 631-2687. Be sure to pick up a copy of 
             Artvoice to read the entire article. It will make your mouth water!

             For those that are not familiar with the area. Virginia Place is a Street  (One Way)
              off of Allen between Delaware and Franklin. It runs South to Virginia Street.

4/17/99  Special news for the Town of Tonawanda -Bob Bolt from Mike's Subs in the 
              Village of Kenmore will be announcing the "Taste of the Town"
              participants in the Town's Showcase '99 that will be held on 5/14 to 5/16 at
            the Lincoln Arena at Parker and Decatur in the Town. He will be providing 
             the names next week. It's not too late to join the fun if you would like to join

             Janice Okun of the Buffalo News went to Tiara and gave it 2 1/2*. Tiara is a

             Janice Okun also has a great article called "Counter Culture" about restaurants
             that serve food at counters. It's a great article in Friday's GUSTO and a real keeper.
             I would like to see an article about Breakfast in Western NY. I have a real
              weakness for eggs and home fries in the morning. Some of my favorites are
             TOWNE on Military and Tremaine in Kenmore, TOM'S on Sheridan and 
              N. Bailey, OLYMPIC on Sheridan and Military, and for best coffee -
              J.J.'s on Kenmore near Englewood. There has to be dozen's more that
             I haven't even tried. Please drop me an e-mail to let me know your favorites.

4/4/99 In the Buffalo New's First Sunday today, Lois Baker's article in the Gourmet
           section was all about Toni Silveri and the restaurant called 
           Little Talia Trattoria. Included in the article is her recipe for Lasagna Fresca.
             It is a Roasted vegetable Lasagna with Two Sauces. It sounds wonderful!
             Little Talia is at 1458 Hertel Ave. 833-8667

4/3/99 Helen Russell from Buffalo Beat visited DiTondo's Restaurant and
             titled her article "Hidden Treasure on the Lower East Side". She gave it 
             2 1/2* for Cuisine and Service and 1 1/2* for Decor. They are located 
             370 Seneca Street at Hamburg. 855-8838. They have lunch Mon. - Fri.
             from 11 - 2PM and dinners on Friday only from 5 - 9 PM. When Helen went
             " the place was packed".

          Joe George, in his Artvoice column called "food for thought", has an
             article titled "On Making Dough". All of us have pasta regularly, but few
           of us have actually made it from scratch. Joe gives us a great article
             about the making of pasta dough and after reading it you'll want to give

        Mark's Dinning Room (formerly Warren's) was visited by the Buffalo News'
          food editor Janice Okun and received a 4* rating! This is no suprise for

3/27/98 Artvoice has a great article by Paula Alba-Marshall about Share Our Strength's
           Taste of the Nation. It's at the Rich Renaissance Atrium on April 11th. from
            11 AM to 3 PM. There are 27 restaurants and 4 liquor distributors participating, and
              100 % of the ticket sales go to local anti-hunger and anti-poverty orgs. It's being
             co-sponsored by American Express and Williams-Sonaoma. Tickets are $25 pre-sale
             and $30 at the door. We're talking about some of the best restaurants and finest
             chefs in Western NY donating their food and talents to fight hunger.

            Janice Okun of the Buffalo News visited the newly reopened Coachman's Inn
             in Clarence - now called Tony Rome's Coachman's Inn. She gave it
             2*. The menu sounds really extensive and certainly worth a visit!

             had an inclination to try making your own beer or wine, this is the place to go.

                KISS 98's Boss of the Sauce was held today at the Airport Raddison.
             The commercial winner was La Riviera (used to be Orazio's) 
             located at the corner of Hertel and Starin. The winner of the two
             previous years was Amici's on Hertel Ave. Congratulations!

           Fat Bob's Smokehouse was also mentioned in Night-Life weekly. The article
             was by Reed Brooks, Esq. who has a column called "What's Great About..."

           The local Federal Meat Markets are now carrying "Omaha Steaks"

             Janice Okun of the Buffalo News visited Alex's Place in Batavia and gave it 3*.
             Alex's is at 9322 Park Rd. in Batavia.  344-2999

3/14/99  Fat Bob's Smokehouse was in the News again today - with a feature article about
             Bob Mollot's venture at 41 Virginia Place. ( If you are new to the area, the best way
             to get there is to head towards Main St. off Delaware Ave. and take the first left.)
             Bob specializes in smoked BBQ ribs. 887-2971 I have never tried them before,
              but they sound delicious. I plan to try some real soon!

             The Village Bake Shoppe in Lewiston was written up in the March issue of 
           Bon Appetite .Tracy Marshall, pastry chef/owner, had her recipe for Apple Cream
             Cheese Torte in the magazine. 

3/13/99 Helen Russell from Buffalo Beat visited a really great restaurant that specializes
             in Northern Italian cooking - Il Fiorentino. This restaurant is always outstanding!
             Ever since it opened in Kenmore 9 years ago, it has consistently received the 
             highest praise from all the Western New York food reviewers. This week Helen
             gave it 3 1/2* for Cuisine and Service and 4* for Atmosphere. Il Fiorentino is now
            located at 8485 Transit Rd.   East Amherst.    625-4250. 

             If you are new to wines, be sure to stop in at Premier Center or Premier Place
             for a very informative wine tutorial that is free! Their web site is www.premiergroup.net
              (It's hard for me to remember their actual names, but maybe it's not all my 
             fault - On the cover of their brochure is the name Premier Group and the names
           Premier Center and Premier Place. Then in the back of the publication is their mailing

3/10/99 Last week Buffalo Beat's Helen Russell, visited Tandoori with an article titled
             "Venture into India. She rated it 2 1/2* for Cuisine, Atmosphere and Service.
             Tandoori is at 7740 Transit Rd. Williamsville 632-1112. The entire article

             In the Buffalo News yesterday was a great article about the Emerson H.S. 
             Culinary Arts program and how they are doing school lunches for the
             Leonaro da Vinci School. They will be opening their own restaurant
             downtown in the Root Bldg, 70 W. Chippewa next Sept.

3/7/99 In the Buffalo News First Sunday, the food article by Lois Baker was about
             the Rendezvous. (520 Niagara St. - 849-1349) The chef there is Dunbar Burdeen,
            and the cuisine is Cajun/Creole

3/6/99 PM Last month Janice Okun visited John's Flaming Hearth,
             1965 Military Rd.,Niagara Falls,NY. 297-1414.
            She only gave it 2*, but one of the treats that John's is famous for,
             is their Pumpkin Ice Cream pie. This may not be the exact recipe, but
             I guarantee you will love it anyway.  Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie

3/6/98  Janice Okun from the Buffalo News visited Peter K's, to sample 
             some of their "Stuffed Potato Pancakes", which is their
              unique specialty. Over all, she only gave it 2*, but in the article
             everything sounded great. Peter K's is at 2709 Harlem Rd. in Cheektowaga.

             Joe George gives us "food for thought" in Artvoice this week. This week
             he writes about beer and gives several recipes.

             It' was announced in the Buffalo News on the 3rd, that a Starbucks and
           Elmwood Taco and Sub shop will open at Delaware and Chippewa.

             Cafe and gave it 2 1/2*. Taylor's is in Taylor's Dept. Store, 337

2/25/99 Sorry for the delays. I know tht I have a lot of catching up to do. 
             My computer blew out the video on the motherboard and I had to
            replace most of the system. Then on the weekend the flu blew out my 
             motherboard. Mother Nature is slowly rebuilding it.

             I stopped by Premier to pick up a form for their cooking contest.
             By luck I ran into Janet Ostrow (owner) who explained about the
              contest. Basically, it's a recipe contest that features Buffalo's
              Own Sahlen's ham off the bone. Must be submitted to Premier
             Gourmet by Feb. 12th. Questions call 877-3574 Ask for Don or Jim.

                 Another great offering is the Sunday Cooking Classes.

             great. Potato Chowder and New England Clam Chowder.
             Artvoice is a free weekly publication. I usually pick mine up at
           Premier  on Delaware.

1/17/99 No - I didn't forget about the restaurant reviewers from 
           Artvoice and Buffalo Beat. There were no reviews this week in
             either of those weekly papers.

             Read last week that Fazoli's has closed it's doors in WNY.

             If you are looking for some great recipes for that slow-cooker
             you got for Christmas,Sheila Lukins gives a few in her
             column called Simply Delicious in PARADE.

1/16/99  With Friday's GUSTO came the great news that Biac's has 
             reached the rarefied atmosphere of 4* dining in Western NY. At
             least according to the News' food editor, Janice Okun. Biac's 
             World Bistro is located at 581 Delaware Ave. near Allen  881-9439

             The Park Lane is closed this week for final stages of renovations. 
             They plan to reopen next week
